Freshwater Parrot Fish

Freshwater parrot fish are very well-known for their size, bright color and parrot-like mouth.
These fish can grow to 8 inches long and males can grow to be over 1 foot long and they can live for several years. There are many different colors of freshwater parrot fish available. This is because these fish are dyed. However, as they start to get older, their color will start changing. This is especially true of the red parrot fish.
It is very difficult to get freshwater parrot fish to breed in captivity. However, recently there have been more people who have reported that their freshwater parrot fish actually are successfully breeding within their aquariums. Regardless of what the outcome may be, these fish will still try breeding in aquariums. They will actually do this rather frequently, as in every couple of weeks many times. During this breeding these fish will have a brief courtship during which time they will clean up an area that they want to use for nesting. The eggs will then be laid inside of these nests, but probably will not hatch. This will not stop these fish from trying though. However, once their eggs have fungus grow over them the parents will know that their efforts at breeding have failed and so the eggs will be eaten.
Freshwater parrot fish do great in your aquarium when it has a neutral pH. However, they will be shy at first but their great personalities will eventually shine forth. You will also see that these fish are not very picky. The only time that you will find that these fish will be nasty is whenever another fish disturbs its digging. This is only because the other fish is disturbing the parrot fish's nest.
